Suggestions as you Look for a Plastic Surgeon - Monday, October 29, 2007

Plastic surgery is becoming increasingly common among more men and women each year, and selecting a qualified plastic surgeon is of the utmost importance to your safety, well-being and end result.

With advances in plastic surgery techniques and the increased demand for cosmetic surgery, it is important to know how to identify highly skilled and highly qualified plastic surgeons. The most important factor in the surgery's success is the surgeon you choose. Some suggestions for making a well-informed decision are:

Find references. Consult some friends who have had a comparable procedure. Evaluate their experience with the surgeon. For a medical opinion, ask your family physician to recommend one or more qualified plastic surgeons. Calling a respected hospital in your community could not only give you additional names but assure you that even if the surgeon has their own surgical facility, he or she maintains privileges at that specific hospital.

Do some homework. After gathering a list of plastic surgeons, begin to check their credentials. Although a physician's schooling is important, in your research it is more important to look for the type of training they received. If the surgeon has completed an accredited residency program in plastic surgery, then the surgeon received two or three years of intensive training in the full spectrum of both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Board certification. A plastic surgeon can obtain board certification from a number of medical societies. It is imperative to know which board certifying societies to look for. A board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the most prestigious certification a plastic surgeon can achieve. To be eligible for certification by the ABPS, plastic surgeons not only need to graduate from an accredited medical school but complete at least five years of additional residency. To be certified, a physician must also practice plastic surgery for two years and pass comprehensive written and oral exams. Obtaining certification through some alternative boards may only require a monetary fee.

At Your Initial Consultation

Bring any questions you may have regarding the procedure to your consultation. Look at before and after photos of actual patients with the surgeon during your consultation. Read actual patient testimonials, if they are available. Do not feel uncomfortable to verbally ask the surgeon of their qualifications and training as a plastic surgeon. It is your right to get to know your plastic surgeon.

Ear Pinning May be the Solution You've Been Looking For - Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is the only cosmetic surgery regularly performed on children because the ears are a special case. Unlike most of our bodies, our ears have achieved close to their full size and shape by age 4. This makes them ideal sites for early intervention on the part of a skilled and sensitive plastic surgeon.

Often, children are teased relentlessly if their ears stick out, and this can do a great deal of damage to their self-image and confidence.

Much of children's bodies are constantly changing; they often grow right out of clothes and shoes. They lose their baby teeth to get adult teeth and even wisdom teeth. Most cosmetic procedures are not recommended for children, but otoplasty is. The cartilage in children's ears is more easily shaped, making this a procedure that is best done at a young age.

Otoplasty is a Safe and Permanent Solution

Otoplasty will not affect your child's hearing because only surface-level changes are made on the ears. The surgery begins with an incision in the natural fold where the ear joins the head. The surgeon then may remove skin and cartilage to achieve the desired effect. At this time, the ear can also be reshaped as well. Sometimes, it is not necessary to remove any tissue but simply to move the ear and hold it in its new position with sutures until it heals permanently in place.

The child will have to wear bandages for a few days, and if he or she is a side-sleeper, there may be some disruption of sleeping for a week, but the surgery heals quickly and children are allowed to return to their normal activities as soon as they feel able. When they return to normal activities, they will be happier without the teasing they had experienced before surgery. The scarring is very slight and well-concealed in the natural fold behind the ear.

Because the ears have finished growing before the procedure is performed, the changes are for life and need never be redone. As the child grows and moves on to higher grades and new schools and finds new friends, the unpleasant memories of their early days will be forgotten, and you can watch them grow knowing that your decision has contributed to their happiness.

Are You Contemplating Plastic Surgery? - Tuesday, October 23, 2007

If you are contemplating cosmetic surgery, the physicians at The Centre, P.C. in Elkhart, Indiana have some suggestions that may make your decision to commit to plastic surgery easier. We have four basic recommendations during the exciting, but also, sometimes confusing, decision-making process regarding cosmetic surgery.

First of all, we recommend that you do your homework. Research the cosmetic surgery procedure you are considering and talk to people who have had the same procedure done. You should be aware of the benefits and the risks, and when you come to our office, our physicians and staff will explain everything to you and answer all of your questions.

Second, we encourage all of our prospective patients to have realistic expectations regarding what surgery will do for you. Plastic surgery often does make dramatic changes in your appearance and your life, but it's not a cure-all for everything "not right" in your life. During your consultation, we will discuss your expectations with you and explain what the realistic expectations of your procedure are.

Third, we insist you be well-informed. We encourage you to read out patient testimonials and to look at the before/after photos of our actual patients. Any office that does not offer both to you may have something to hide.

Lastly, we encourage to ask questions. We are here for you, and we encourage to write all of your questions down as you may forget them at the time of your appointment. We will work hard to make sure you understand what is involved with your procedure, what recovery is like, and what results can be expected.
