The Centre, P.C. offers the most advanced cosmetic surgery procedures to patients in Elkhart and South Bend, Indiana, Michiana and the Southern Michigan area, and Chicago.
Good communication between you and your cosmetic surgeon is vital to the success of your surgery, and it begins at the initial consultation. Generally, the first consultation involves a physical exam, pre-operative photographs, and an explanation of the surgical techniques most appropriate for you.
Other items will be discussed, such as your goals and expectations, insurance, anesthesia and risks. Tell your surgeon if any part of the consultation makes you uncomfortable or if you have special privacy requests. Above all, it's important to have realistic expectations about your surgery. Your doctor can offer significant improvement, but not perfection. Your age and health may play a role in the quality of the outcome.
Facial Surgery
For facial procedures, your physician will evaluate your head-face-neck region, taking into consideration such factors as your hairline, facial hair, scars, damage to the skin from the sun (if any) and skin tightness. In general, male facial skin has a richer blood supply than female facial skin. Therefore, male faces bleed more during surgery, putting men at greater risk for a temporary collection or pooling of blood (hematoma) under the skin after plastic surgery.
Another consideration: Any scarring that may result from the surgery may be more difficult for men to hide than women. Women have the advantage of makeup and hairstyles that can be pulled toward their faces.
If you are concerned about the temporary bruising caused by facial procedures, you'll want to look over the line of camouflage makeup offered by The Centre, P.C. This camouflage makeup is virtually undetectable and will help cover any temporary bruising.
For facelifts, hair growth and beard growth may significantly affect the outcome. For men who are balding or have thinning hair, the doctor will use surgical artistry to hide the incision as much as possible. If hair grows on your upper neck and that area is pulled behind your ears for the procedure, you may need to now shave in that area. Electrolysis may be considered to correct this problem.
Resurfacing Treatments
After a skin-smoothing treatment such as a chemical peel or Microdermabrasion, shaving must be postponed for about three weeks. During that time, your face will be sensitive, swollen and bright pink. You may wish to abstain from alcoholic drinks, as alcohol will cause the areas of treated facial skin to become red and flushed.
Liposuction / Body Contouring
As men age, fat tends to accumulate around the abdomen, the sides of the waist ("love handles"), the breast area (a condition called gynecomastia) and along the chin and neck. Liposuction is an option to remove these fatty areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.
Men retain their skin elasticity longer than women do. In addition, the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer and more vascular than those in women. Therefore, liposuction in men is usually very effective.
A traditional excision procedure (surgical skin removal) may be a consideration for men who have some loose, hanging skin.
Abdomen Reduction
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure for men and women who have hanging abdominal skin, loose abdominal muscles and/or neglected hernias. A tummy tuck, however, can have a long recovery period, with some patients not returning to work for four weeks post-surgery.
