Collagen channeling is a fairly new procedure that helps rejuvenate skin while keeping the epidermis intact. Through collagen channeling, new collagen growth is stimulated, skin texture is improved, and the appearance of scarring and fine-to-moderate lines is reduced.
What skin conditions is collagen channeling used for?
Collagen channeling can be used for facial lines, acne, traumatic and surgical scars, and stretch marks. It is especially useful for people with thin skin, who cannot tolerate a laser resurfacing procedure. It also helps restore skin tightness in the early stages of aging, and can be used in conjunction with peels where collagen is being introduced.
What happens during collagen channeling?
You will receive a local anesthetic, "laughing gas" or light sedation. Your plastic surgeon at The Centre, P.C. will then use a special roller that contains dozens of fine, very sharp medical-quality needles. The device will be rolled over your skin, sending pinpricks into the deep layers. Short-term bleeding occurs following the roller action, and you'll have a slightly bruised appearance. Your face will then be cleaned and a light antibiotic ointment applied. The entire procedure takes approximately 90 minutes.
How long is the healing?
For the first two days, your skin will be red and bruised. You'll want to avoid sun exposure for five days. You will need to wash your face three to four times per day and apply antibiotic ointment in the first two days.
Will the procedure need to be repeated?
In general, results are noticeable after only one treatment. However, a second procedure may be done to gain even greater improvement.
How exactly does collagen channeling work?
By breaching the epidermis, the active ingredients in skin care products can reach into the depths of the skin approximately 10,000 times more effectively than by simply applying the products topically. The higher the levels of vitamin A and vitamin C that can penetrate into the lower layers of the epidermis, the more collagen can be made.
Your Skin Health Professional at The Centre, P.C. will advise you on which products are best for your skin type and condition.
Are there skin conditions for which collagen channeling should be avoided?
Yes. Collagen channeling is not suitable for active acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, severe solar keratosis and raised moles or warts.
