The word arthritis means “joint inflammation” and is defined as anything that irritates or destroys the joint. Inflammation is one of our body’s natural reactions to injury or disease. This includes swelling, pain and stiffness. Inflammation that lasts a long time or is recurring, as in arthritis, can lead to tissue damage.
The hand is the second most common joint to develop arthritis or osteoarthritis, typically at the base of the thumb, which is called the basilar joint. With arthritis, an area in or around the joint becomes inflamed, causing stiffness, pain and sometimes difficulty in movement.
