Custom Splinting
The Centre for Working Hands provides Hand Therapy in Michiana, including Elkhart and South Bend, Indiana.
Custom splinting is an integral part of the rehabilitation process and requires the skill set of an experienced therapist. At The Centre for Working Hands, custom splinting is designed by the therapist and modified to fit the patient based on a particular diagnosis. Splints are used to protect the hand following surgery to repair a tendon or nerve, during fracture healing, to promote wound healing, prevent a deformity during the healing process, or to rest the tissues.
Following a hand injury or disability one objective in hand rehabilitation is to maximize functional return in the hand. Custom splinting is one way to achieve this goal and the correct design and fabrication depends on the skill set of the therapist. The therapist fabricating the splint should be knowledgeable in the upper extremity anatomy and have excellent clinical reasoning skills.
Periodic adjustments may be needed to help increase the benefits of the original splint. Patients will also receive instruction for application of the splint, the wearing schedule, and any home exercises that will enhance the end result.
