Traumatic Fingertip Injuries
An injury to the fingertip may seem small and insignificant, but in fact they can be complicated if the injury involves more than one structure of the finger. This type of injury usually occurs when a finger is crushed between two hard objects, hit with a blunt force (such as a hammer), or closed in a door resulting in more than just soft tissue trauma.
If the injury includes more than the soft tissue, the rehabilitation can be more complex, especially if there is a fracture or complete amputation of the fingertip. Therefore, it is very important that the treating therapist has experience in hand therapy.
In most cases, the rehabilitation plan will include more than an exercise and strengthening program. Typically the course of rehabilitation will include, wound care, custom splinting, desensitization, and functional re-training.
At The Centre For Working Hands, our therapists are now able to offer our patients the latest technology in cold laser light therapy using the Dynatron X3. The Dynatron X3 provides 7 wave forms, has 3 channels, and customizable frequencies and ranges. Light therapy uses a cold laser light to restore balance, energy, and nutrients to damaged cells. Our therapists use the laser light treatment to promote wound and fracture healing. The laser light also helps to decrease inflammation, pain, and manage edema which results in increased ROM and functional use.
