Something Old, Something New

Chinese, Indonesian, and Japanese festivals, rituals, and myths abound with bamboo symbolizing life energy, prosperity, longevity, sexuality, and fertility. In China, stalks of bamboo still symbolize eternal youth, strength, prosperity, and peace. What may seem like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots and perhaps deeper associations than simply bodywork.
Today, bamboo massage is often called Bamboo-Fusion or Tian di Bamboo Massage. Tian di means “heaven and earth” and is promoted as the latest in exotic treatments or for massage therapists as a new tool, but bamboo can be seen as much more than a new trend or accessory. This exotic, full-body massage is a luxurious experience that you will not soon forget.
Bamboo is not only for Panda bears, chopsticks, fishing poles, flooring and now even clothing. Bamboo is strong and holds heat, all good things for a therapeutic massage. With the help of a heating pad and some oil, bamboo is a great tool for the therapist as it retains heat and glides easily over the body. It can give a deeper massage without much pressure from the therapist. The bamboo sticks are actually called cho sticks and when used correctly, they can feel like an extension of the therapists’ hands.
A bamboo massage uses bamboo stalks of varying lengths and diameter to provide deep-tissue work. The massage begins with an application of rich, moisturizing lotion or oil to the skin. Your massage therapist will then knead, roll and tap the bamboo sticks along your body, freeing your muscles of tension. The massage itself promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception and provides a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.
