Laser Treatment | Skin Care

Laser technology has revolutionized many areas of plastic surgery. Many types of lasers are available, and many more are under development. At The Centre, P.C., we continually research emerging laser technologies to determine which ones our patients can most benefit from. Currently, we use the following lasers:

Yellow Pulsed-Dye Laser. This laser is often used for children who have pinkish birthmarks known as port-wine stains. The laser destroys the abnormal blood vessels, lightening the birthmark to the point of being barely noticeable. Scarring is minimal.

Pigment-Blasting Laser Family. This group of lasers includes the Q-switch ruby, the Q-switch YAG and the alexandrite. These lasers eliminate the black and blue pigments of tattoos, pigmented lesions and brown age spots.

YAG Laser. Hemangiomas (skin growths with heavy concentrations of blood vessels) benefit greatly from the YAG laser. Unlike other lasers, the YAG tip can be placed directly on the skin to deliver its highly focused energy.

The number of treatments a patient receives varies greatly and depends on the size and severity of the skin disorder.

Laser treatments are also used to resurface skin that has been damaged. Using carbon dioxide, this procedure is sometimes called a laser peel. It can be used cosmetically to minimize the appearance of fine lines on the face, but is also effective for facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation. In some cases, laser peels produce less bleeding, bruising and post-operative discomfort. For any bruising that does occur, The Centre, P.C. carries a line of camouflage makeup that is virtually undetectable.

The important thing to remember about any laser procedure is that it isn't a replacement for traditional surgery, where the scalpel is still the proven instrument of choice.
