Botox, skin resurfacing and eyelid surgery. In the past, these procedures were thought to be meant for Hollywood beauties and females trying to slow down the affects of time.

Now, more local men are seeking these nonsurgical options to enhance and improve their physical appearance, says Dr. Ronald Downs, a board certified plastic surgeon from The Centre, P.C. in Elkhart."A lot of anti-aging treatments are being done," he says. "We're able to offer treatments for this, so more men are coming in."

Local men seeking procedures follows the national trend in which male nonsurgical cosmetic surgery increased 21 percent between 2006 and 2007 according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Downs, however, believes this statistic is due in part to the fact that all cosmetic procedures are becoming more popular.
"There is an underpinning there in the sense that cosmetic procedures overall have increased over the past few years by 25 percent," he says. "The nonsurgical procedures have definitely outrun surgical procedures in growth among males, but they're both increasing."

He says the men he sees coming into his practice are baby boomers or a little younger, between the ages of 35 and 55.
"(The men) feel good and they want to do whatever they can to look younger," Downs says.

Most of the men he treats have sought out the practice on their own because they want to fix something cosmetically."I think most of them are new," he says. "I don't think many are repeat patients or following their wives into the practice."

In the past, surgical procedures required a lot of recovery time, something he says probably deterred a lot of men.
Procedures also required a different kind of preparation for both the patient and the doctor.

"A man undergoing cosmetic surgery has a whole different set of things that affect his surgical outcome more than women," Downs says. "It's a whole different approach to surgery for a man than it is for a woman."

With the advent of new technologies and nonsurgical procedures, though, there aren't as many risks involved and the recovery time for procedures is much shorter.

"I think the nonsurgical and non-down time aspect is what's attractive to everybody," Downs says. "I think both of those reasons are drawing men into it."
