How To Tell If You're Wearing the Colors That Suit You Best
If you know whether you are "cool" or "warm," you can always choose the most flattering colors. If you don't know, answer these questions:
- Does black look good on you?
- Is your hair prematurely gray?
- Do you tan?
- Are you olive-complected?
- Are your teeth white?
If you answer "yes" to most of these, you're almost certainly cool.
Or:
- Do you have red hair and freckles?
- Does black make you look tired?
- Do you burn in the sun?
- Do you color your gray hair because it looks awful on you?
A "yes" to most of these means you're probably warm.
Tips for Amazing Base® Loose Powders
To release the minerals, remove the seal from the sifter or puncture holes in the seal for a more controlled flow. Do not remove the sifter. Replace the lid, turn the jar upside down and tap the bottom of the jar. A small quantity of the minerals will now be available in the sifter.
To choose the correct color, test a little on the jaw line. Try to do this in natural light if possible. Jane Iredale recommends beginning with the Natural and Amber bases because they have the same value, but Natural has a pink undertone and Amber a yellow. It will be easy to see whether to go lighter, darker, more pink or more yellow. The minerals are much more forgiving than conventional makeup - one shade will suit a wide variety of skin tones because the minerals are light reflective and refractive and do not absorb light the way matte makeup does.
Cleanse the face and moisturize. Allow the moisturizer to absorb. Then, lightly dip a chisel powder brush into the powder, and use the lid or dish to work the powder into the brush so it's evenly distributed. The Chisel Powder Brush gives you absolute control, especially in areas around the eyes and nose. The minerals should cling to the bristles all the way around the brush and not just on the ends. Don't use a brush with a large head. This will make the powders fly.
Apply the minerals in thin layers using downward strokes. If you've put on too much, use the flocked sponge to remove any excess. (It's easy to overdo when you are first working with these powders because they are so concentrated.) Then spot with the sponge if you need additional coverage.
- Tip: For extra coverage, mix a small amount of powder into your favorite moisturizer, then apply as you would a cream foundation. This is especially good for areas under the eyes and for concealing large pores.
- Tip: For a liquid foundation, spritz D2O on our flocked sponge, lightly pick up loose or pressed minerals and apply as a wash. Or, mix the loose minerals with D2O and apply with a sponge. 50/50 is usually a good ratio.
- Tip: Use a darker base as a contour or bronzer (Latte and Maple are especially good.) This makes the skin come alive and also increases the sun protection.
- Tip: If the minerals look powdery, wait a few minutes for the skin's natural oils to emerge, or spritz with D2O. This sets the makeup very quickly.
Tips for PurePressed® Base Powders
The sponge that comes with the compact should be used only for touch-ups. We recommend applying PurePressed with the brush designed especially for these powders - The Handi. It's made from squirrel and pony for the softest feel and the most even coverage. It's also small enough to throw into a bag. It's a "go-everywhere," "do-anything" brush - use it for blush and for blending. Lightly brush The Handi over the pressed powders and apply in downward strokes. The pressed powders are more matte than the loose, which is especially good for those with oily skins.
- Tip: After you've applied blush, without picking up more base powder, use The Handi to blend everything together.
Tips for Using Loose and Pressed Powders for Camouflage
Jane Iredale powders will cover any type of redness. The following directions will tell you how to camouflage erythema from laser resurfacing, but the same techniques apply to rosacea, acne, birthmarks, etc.
Cleanse the face and moisturize. Allow the moisturizer to absorb. If you are dealing with post-laser, the skin will be very dry, so you may want to apply more moisturizer than normal. Test for the correct complexion color. We usually use a yellow-based powder to cover redness, but it's worth trying the complexion color first to see if it will cover without the help of the yellow base. Favorite bases for concealing redness are: Warm Sienna, Amber and Warm Silk. For darker complexions: Golden Glow, Caramel, Autumn.
We recommend using the Flocked Sponge to apply the first layer of powder because it will spread the minerals evenly; it's soft (very important for skin that has had laser treatment, which is extremely sensitive), and it's washable, dries quickly and will last indefinitely.
With the flocked sponge, pick up some of the powder and press it into the sponge for even distribution. Now with a pressing, rocking motion try the color on some of the erythema. If it doesn't completely cover, apply Warm Sienna first. This base will immediately neutralize the red. YOU DO NOT NEED GREEN! Green works for artists on canvasses; on skin it gives a gray, ghost-like pallor. Apply a thin layer of Warm Sienna on the red areas. Layer again if you need to.
It's better to layer than try to cover everything at once.
Now, brush the complexion color over the entire face taking special care to blend it into the areas already covered.
If the powders appear to accentuate wrinkles or look dry because the skin is flaky from the resurfacing, spritz the face with D20. Be aware that for several days after laser the skin will flake. This doesn't look very attractive even with the minerals on. To counteract this, work moisturizer into your skin right on top of the powders. It will absorb through. Touch up again if necessary.
Blush is a very useful tool for raising your morale. After a procedure, you may have looked in the mirror many times and wondered what on earth you've done to yourself and whether you'll ever be normal again. But you'll be amazed at the coverage given by the powders. Lift your spirits by applying a touch of blush. Stay away from pink tones and stick with the neutral or brown blushes like Sheer Honey, Cinnamon or Bronzer.
If you've had laser on your eyelids, brush the base on, but also go over with Ecru eye shadow. Put a quick dab of PureGloss on, and you're ready to face the world.
- Tip: For full-face laser, don't try to make the entire face the same color as the neck. This will end up looking like a mask. Use the flocked sponge to work the powder into the demarcation line along the jaw. Keep going over it until the line is covered. You may then brush the powders over the entire face without having to apply too thickly. You will just look as if you have a slight tan.
- Tip: Carry the D2O with you. This helps with moisture but also feels good on an irritated skin. The itching and burning, commonly associated with laser resurfacing, should also be calmed down by the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
Tips for Disappear™
This concealer started out with the challenge of developing something that would solve a problem, namely covering tattoos. Not only does it solve that problem, it contains ingredients that may help to clear blemishes and act as an antioxidant on the skin.
Its state-of-the-art liposome formula allow so much pigment to be packed in that two layers will cover almost everything, including black tattoos. Also included are seaweed extracts, superoxide dismutase (a copper-containing protein enzyme that decomposes free radicals), and the potent antioxidant green tea extract. Green tea extract isn't just an antioxidant, but has also been documented to combat acne bacteria.
Disappear comes packaged in a tube with a patented applicator that allows you to apply it directly on to the skin. You may also apply Disappear with the Camouflage Brush. Begin by layering and feathering the edges. When you have enough coverage, pat on the appropriate mineral powder (Amazing Base or PurePressed.) Disappear will grab the powder and give you a truly opaque finish so make sure you graduate the camouflage to avoid seeing edges.
Tips for Circle\Delete™ Concealer
The ultimate undereye concealer. Apply with a camouflage brush for an even application and the ability to get into areas like the corner of the eye. Apply in thin layers rather than trying to cover everything at once. Blend the duo colors for an exact match to the skin or for a shade lighter. Circle\Delete can be applied on top of or underneath the mineral powders. If the skin is wrinkled, Circle\Delete can be used alone. The dark peach color in Circle\Delete #2 effectively neutralizes blue, so it can also be used as a concealer for surgical bruises.
This is an eye treatment as well as a concealer.
Also, use Circle\Delete as an additional concealer if needed for blemishes, hyperpigmentation, etc.
Brush Circle\Delete around lips and allow to dry before applying lip color. This will help to prevent feathering.
Tips for CoverCare™ Concealer
This was developed as a true camouflage to help plastic surgeons cover bruising since a shadow of the bruise usually shows through the powders. But it is also effective covering birthmarks, scarring, hyperpigmentation, psoriasis, etc. CoverCare is a concentrated oil-free cream. When it dries, it will stay on the skin until it is removed with a cleanser.
The best way to use CoverCare is with the Camouflage Brush. This gives an even coverage and ultimate control. It is better to apply it in thin layers rather than trying to cover everything at once. Let the product dry between layering. If you are going to apply the mineral powders on top, don't let the last layer dry completely. Apply the powders while CoverCare is still tacky; the powders will adhere better. Be sure to feather the edges so there is no demarcation line.
- Tip: You may also mix CoverCare with some loose minerals in order to change the color to match the skin. If this makes it too thick, mix with some moisturizer or D2O.
Tips for PurePressed® Matte Finish Powder
This powder is specially formulated to help those with oily skins. It will absorb oil and cut shine. Apply with the Handi brush under or over the mineral bases. Experiment to see which works best for you. Touch up with the puff provided in the compact.
Tips for PurePressed® Blush
A little goes a long way! Use the White Fan brush so that you can see how much you've picked up and because the brush's contoured bristles will help to blend. Knock off any excess. The perfect blush shade is the color of the cheek when flushed or exercising.
Begin the blush on the apple of the cheek (the fleshy part that protrudes when you smile) and brush upward and outwards along the cheekbone. Layer two colors: a neutral first and then a pop of a brighter color on the apple of the cheek. This looks more natural than just one color.
- Tip: Do harmonize blush and lip color. It gives a lovely natural, pulled-together look.
Tips for PurePressed™ Eye Shadow
It's always a good idea to brush the base powder on the eyelid to even out the color and for the sun protection. Then use one of the eye shadow base shades like Ecru, Shell or Oyster from lashes to under brow. Apply with the Eye Shader brush. Concentrate a darker shade on the outer corner of the eye and sweep across the lid with the Eye Contour brush. Use the Eye Liner/Brow brush and a darker shadow to draw a smoky line as close to the top and bottom lashes as possible. Flip the brush over and use the sponge tip to smudge the line. Use the shadows wet or dry. A wet line has an amazing "stay" ability as well as giving a deeper color.
- Tip: Don't try to match the eye color since this will only cancel out the eye. A complementary (contrasting) color is what makes the eye pop.
Tips for PureBrow™ Colour
The brow color is in a mascara wand with a hollow fiber brush. The wiper is specially designed to take off enough color so that it doesn't "glob" on the brows. Gently stroke the brush onto the brow hairs using upward motions. Don't apply too much at once. Use two colors for the ultimate natural effect. Comes in Blonde, Auburn, Brunette, Deep Brown and Raven (Raven is best for those with very dark to black hair). Use the darker colors like Raven to cover grey hairs in brows.
Tips for PureLash™ Mascara
A gentle, water resistant formula that contains no shellac or petroleum products. If you are going to layer mascara, don't wait for each application to dry. This is what makes lashes stick together. Comes in black and brown.
Tips for PureLash™ Lengthening Mascara
Gentle and water resistant with no shellac or petroleum products. It contains wheat protein to curl lashes and hollow fibers to lengthen them. Again, layer and don't wait for layers to dry. Apply in an upward sweeping motion. Comes in black, brown and navy.
- Tip: If you value your lashes, don't use waterproof mascara.
Tips for PureMoist™ LipColour
Always use a pencil base as it helps to keep color on and gives depth to the overall color. Apply it with a lip brush. If you apply the pencil directly, blotting it will make it stay longer. Then apply a PureMoist LipColour or PureGloss on top. No heavy, dark lines. They are dated and make the lips look smaller. Remember that lips have no oil glands, and they need the moisturizing, conditioning formula contained in our LipColours, LipSheres and PureGloss. Jane Iredale does not use petrolatum because it dries out the lips.
