Elkhart Physicians Help Local Breast Cancer Patients Discover More Options

The Centre, P.C. offers the latest plastic surgery procedures to patients in Elkhart and South Bend, Indiana, Michiana and the Southern Michigan area, and Chicago.

Elkhart, IN (August 5, 2009) – Elkhart, Indiana (August 5, 2009) – Two Elkhart surgeons are going out of their way to educate women diagnosed with breast cancer about their options for breast reconstructive surgery – a procedure that can help women regain self-confidence after a mastectomy.

Ronald K. Downs, MD, FACS, founder of The Centre, P.C., and Patrick Viscardi, MD, announced today their participation in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ Choice Campaign. The ASPS conducted a recent national study that indicates many women undergoing a mastectomy are unaware of health insurance benefits that may provide for breast reconstructive surgery.

“The results of this study suggest that more than half of the women in the country battling breast cancer don’t realize they are eligible for breast reconstructive surgery,” said Dr. Downs. “Thanks to the excellent, involved physicians in Michiana, those numbers do not accurately reflect our community. Nevertheless, the Choice Campaign will help make it easier for women to learn their options.”

As part of their goal to educate patients, Drs. Downs and Viscardi recently joined a weekly forum coordinated by St. Joseph Breast Cancer Center and Memorial Regional Cancer Center. In these forums a team of physicians of all specialties work together to create individualized treatment plans for women battling breast cancer. In addition, Drs. Downs and Viscardi are involved in the Goshen Center for Cancer Care and Elkhart General’s Breast Care Center.

“When patients are aware of reconstructive options immediately following diagnoses, plastic surgeons can work closely with the patient’s oncologists as well as other physicians to ensure the best possible breast reconstruction treatment plan,” continued Dr. Downs. “The chief goal of the Choice Campaign is to help more women achieve the best possible outcome.”

Drs. Downs and Viscardi are both members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. As the largest organization of board certified plastic surgeons in the world, ASPS represents more than 7,000 physician members, and is recognized as a leading information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

The Centre, P.C. is a comprehensive plastic surgery practice with board certified plastic surgeons—both members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons—who deliver professional care to patients throughout northern Indiana, southern Michigan and the Chicago area. Reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, hand therapy services, and non-surgical options including skin health products and a medical spa are all available at both their Elkhart and Chesterton locations.
