New, Less Expensive Alternative to BOTOX® Offered for First Time in Michiana

Elkhart, Indiana (September 14, 2009) – After many years as one of the most popular facial wrinkle treatment procedures in America, BOTOX® Cosmetic finally has FDA-approved competition – and Michiana patients now have access to it.
The Centre, P.C. announced today that it is the first medical spa in the area to offer DYSPORT™, the first and only FDA-approved alternative to BOTOX Cosmetic. DYSPORT uses the same basic ingredient as BOTOX Cosmetic, but is less expensive and, in some cases, has been shown to produce longer lasting results. DYSPORT was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April, 2009.
“Like BOTOX, DYSPORT uses small doses of botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily relaxes facial muscles that cause creases in your skin,” said Ronald Downs, MD, FACS, founder of The Centre, P.C. “When these muscles relax, your wrinkles fade away. Until now, patients only had one option to treat wrinkles in this way. Plastic surgeons and patients have been waiting years for a safe alternative like DYSPORT.”
During the procedure, small amounts of DYSPORT are injected into a patient’s underlying facial muscles. Patients see results in as little as a few days as these muscles relax and creases fade away. On average, one DYSPORT treatment produces results that last between three and four months. Like BOTOX Cosmetic, the DYSPORT treatment should only be administered under the supervision of a board certified plastic surgeon.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, injections of botulinum toxin type A have been the number one nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for the past five years, with over 2.4 million total procedures in 2008 alone. The U.S. aesthetic market for botulinum toxin type A is estimated to be approximately $300 to $400 million.
