Demi and Rosario Achieve Certification as Hand Therapists

Sharon Demi, MHS, PT, CHT, and Ileana Rosario, CHT, have been certified as hand therapists by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (Kansas City, MO).

Sharon Demi is a graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy, and the University of Indianapolis with a master’s of health science in orthopedic physical therapy. She has 14 years’ experience treating upper extremity and cumulative trauma dysfunction and other orthopedic problems. Demi has been with The Centre, P.C. for two years.

A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico with a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy, Ileana Rosario joined The Centre, P.C. in 1997. Previously, she worked for a local acute-care hospital in the transitional care unit and outpatient settings. Rosario also spent a year with the University of Chicago Hospital Hand Clinic where she started her training in hand rehabilitation.

The CHT designation indicates that an individual has achieved the highest level of professional excellence in hand therapy. It can be used only by occupational therapists and physical therapists who have met a number of requirements, including five years of practice as an occupational therapist of physical therapist, with 2,000 hours of current practice in upper extremity rehabilitation, as well as successful mastery of the Hand Therapy Certification Examination.

The examination encompasses seven domains of hand therapy, such as evaluation, treatment planning and treatment implementation. To maintain CHT certification, therapists must participate in continuing education in hand therapy and meet stringent guidelines for professional conduct.
