There are several radio frequency systems currently on the market. The most commonly known is ThermaCool or ThermaLift (Thermage Corporation). The treatment uses a handheld instrument to transmit an electric radio frequency through the skin to heat the collagen fibers in the dermis, causing them to contract and tighten. It stimulates the growth of new collagen over several months, which further firms the skin.

While the pulses of energy are being delivered, a cryogen cooling spray keeps the surface of the skin from burning. The procedure is also being investigated for the treatment of the body, including sagging breasts, droopy buttocks and slackened elbows and knees. For early signs of aging, a radio frequency procedure may be used to subtly tighten the lower face and neck. After you are prepped and given protective goggles to wear, the doctor will begin treatment, which can be as short as 15 minutes for the jaw line and 25 minutes for the brow area.

Early reports are that it is a very painful procedure, and an intense prickling sensation may be felt, but the discomfort has been greatly reduced by the introduction of newer methods. Results are not immediate, but may improve over the course of two to five months as the skin becomes firmer. One or more treatments may be needed. Cost varies from $1,500 - $2,500 per treatment depending on your location. Thermage® just launched in Europe as well. Note: This treatment will not produce miracles and is not a facelift substitute.

An Advisory for Our Patients

At this time, The Centre, P.C. does not offer Thermage. Most experience to date is that Thermage is a relatively painful procedure that has not proven to give consistent results. Studies show that only about 60 percent of patients see "some" result from the procedure. In addition, it carries a fairly salty price due to the cost of the equipment. Data on long-term results is disappointing. We will continue to monitor the development of this procedure and keep you informed as new data becomes available.
