How To Pick The Right Spa For You

There are no shortages of medical spas in the South Bend area, but they don’t offer the same level of care that you might need.

You know you’re looking for a relaxing massage or perhaps you’re curious about rejuvenating services like Botox or laser skin resurfacing.

With so many options in the area, do you know how to find the right spa for you?

Katherine Biggerstaff, the spa director at The Centre Yourself Medical Spa, listed out a few things you might want to consider before scheduling that procedure.

These questions should help you decide which spa not only has the procedures you want, but the safety checks and proper training to get the job done safely.

Is it a real medical spa?

We’re seeing more medical spas open without board-certified physicians that specialize in skin care, cosmetic, plastic or facial plastic surgeries. It is very important that the supervising doctor has the experience and training needed to address any complications that arise from medical spa treatments.

If there is a complication with treatment, it is important there is a doctor on site to immediately address any concerns. Is the medical spa equipped to handle emergencies? Sometimes doctors lend their names to medical spas but have very little involvement.

You should also ask if the medical director is on site.

Aestheticians work very closely with their medical directors to develop treatment plans. Medical facials also use medical grade skin care products.  Having a medical director allows the provider to incorporate these products into your treatment as well as prescribe more effective medical- grade skin care products. Using medical grade skin care products helps you achieve the results that cannot be obtained with over the counter products.

For example, stronger peel solutions can be used which will result in better results. Another benefit of going to a medical spa is that medical facials complement other noninvasive treatments such as injectable dermal fillers or lasers treatments which may help you reach your goal faster.

We’ve also seen a rise in “medical spas” that are outside of a doctor’s office. Those businesses are not required to have the same safety standards of those that are in a credentialed medical facility.

Please do your homework and make sure the facility that you are visiting has the appropriate licensing.

About Botox and Filler Injections

Make sure whoever is performing your treatment is an experienced licensed physician or a well-trained nurse operating under a doctor’s supervision.  It’s also okay to ask for the package insert to see the expiration date on any injectable they might use.

And when it comes to Botox and other filler injections you should be asking questions like:

  • What are your credentials?
  • Which products will you be using?
  • What is your Botox dilution?

It is important your injector has had training in using dermal fillers to make sure you achieve optimal aesthetic results. Getting a great natural looking result requires precision and knowledge of facial anatomy.

Training, Training, and More Training

You want your aesthetician to be trained and qualified for the procedures they’re offering.

Many aestheticians only complete a certain number of hours to receive their license and aren’t required to complete any advanced training.

When you contact a medical spa, don’t hesitate to ask questions like “How long have you been doing this procedure?” or “What other training has your aesthetician completed?”

And if you’re not comfortable with the answers you’ve received, look them up elsewhere.

One way to research the qualifications of your aesthetician is to go on the state board of cosmetology site and look up your aesthetician by name. This will show you their active license. It is important to make sure your provider has received the appropriate training, licensure, and certifications.

It is ok to ask for other certifications they may have for such procedures like chemical peels and lasers.

For laser skin treatments, you’ll want them to be qualified to use the devices. Someone without proper training can cause damage to a patient.

Laser skin treatments destroy damaged skin cells as well as stimulate the production of new skin cells and collagen. It is very important that your aesthetician/laser technician has received training before operating any laser.

Technology is always advancing and it is important to make sure your provider is receiving ongoing education.

Beware of Discounted Services!

Be leery of discounts or Groupons. The math just doesn’t add up.

Prices for medical spa treatments are high because technology is always changing and the equipment itself is expensive.

Older machines may require more treatments, which demands more time and money from the patient. They might not be able to get your desired results.

Not only should you be concerned with what type of equipment they are using but also how frequently it is maintained and inspected. Faulty equipment, like outdated equipment, may require additional treatments to get what you want. In the worst case scenario, they may cause irreparable damage.

If the price sounds too good to be true it usually is.
