Platelet rich plasma is derived from your body’s own blood. To start, a small amount of blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge to separate the components of blood. Plasma and platelets are divided from the red and white blood cells, creating platelet rich plasma or PRP. Platelets are known to contain large quantities of growth factors which attract stem cells and stimulate the healing of damaged tissues. Clinical work over the last several years has established the safety and usefulness of platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) for tissue repair and healing.
Microneedling with PRP
Since platelets help tissue heal and grow new cells, the PRP is injected into the specific areas of tissue where the patient would like to rejuvenate. The PRP injection helps stimulate collagen production, regenerates tissue and ultimately smooths and tightens skin.
PRP injections are different compared to other injectables like Restylane and Juvederm which relies on Hyaluronic Acid to fill and plump fine lines. While hyaluronic acid fillers can be used in conjunction with PRP, PRP can be used on areas of the skin that are not safe for Restylane and Juvederm. Other injectables are good for 6-18 months whereas PRP injections result in permanent changes to the body’s tissues and increased longevity of results.
Platelet Rich Plasma skin rejuvenation aims at improving skin tone and texture, soften lines, tighten skin and reduce the appearance of scars, blemishes or effects of trauma. Results usually show within 3-4 weeks after the treatment session and will continue to improve over time. There is no guarantee and sometimes additional treatments may be indicated.
