Types of Breast Surgery Procedures
Breast Lift
A mastopexy, or breast lift, is the ideal surgical option for correcting ptosis, or breast droopiness. The surgery is designed to remove skin and reshape the surrounding breast tissue to create an enhanced contour along with a lifted breast appearance. During the surgery, it is also very common for women to decrease the size of their areolas to a more favorable cosmetic appearance.
Breast lift surgery does not significantly impact breast size or enhance fullness on the upper part of the breast. However, some patients report a small decrease in size after surgery due to changes in breast shape, as well as a higher position on the chest, giving the breast a more youthful appearance. Some patients may choose to do a breast augmentation in combination with a breast lift.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery uses implants to enhance and restore breast volume. The operation is designed to enhance breast fullness and projection while improving overall body proportions. Further, women have boosted levels of self-confidence and body image after breast augmentation. Breast implants allow for customizable results, while achieving long-lasting enhancement.
Breast Reconstruction
Women diagnosed with breast cancer face a difficult time as they restore their health and well-being. During this time, women will make many decisions regarding treatment options. This includes the decision to have breast reconstruction surgery. Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure in which a plastic surgeon recreates all or part of a breast after it has been surgically removed or altered.
It is well documented that both immediate and delayed breast reconstruction provide substantial benefits for cancer patients in the areas of emotional well-being, vitality, social functioning, functional well-being, and body image.
Candidates for breast reconstruction have been diagnosed with breast cancer and have had or will have a mastectomy (surgical removal of the breast). Patients who have elected to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy due to positive genetic testing are also candidates for breast reconstruction. In addition, candidates have had or will have breast conservation surgery, such as a partial mastectomy or lumpectomy.
Breast Reduction
Women with large breasts may experience several physical difficulties stemming from the additional weight of their chest. Issues that are caused by larger breasts include trouble with certain physical activities, problems with clothing, and back, neck, or shoulder pain. A breast reduction removes excess tissue, skin, and fat to achieve a smaller breast size while improving some or all of these symptoms.
Many women undergo a breast reduction to relieve both physical and emotional distress due to large breast sizes. Additionally, some women want the operation to improve their physical abilities, so they are able to be more active. If a patient can sufficiently prove her oversized breasts are contributing to negative health consequences, she may be able to work with her insurance company in order to cover a reduction procedure. If this procedure only serves a cosmetic purpose, however, then it would normally not be covered by insurance.
Patient Criteria for Breast Surgery
Breast surgery is an excellent choice for any woman who is unhappy with her breast size, shape, and contours, or has been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, to qualify for a cosmetic surgery, a patient must be in good health and not pregnant or breastfeeding. Additionally, a woman must have fully developed breasts before undergoing any breast surgery.
