Neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport are a form of nonsurgical cosmetic injections that are used to treat the signs of aging, resulting in a youthful appearance of your face, neck, and skin.

How do Neurotoxins Work?

Also known as neuromodulators, these cosmetic injections work by blocking signals sent between nerves and muscles. Over time the contraction of the muscles on your face can result in the formation of facial lines as you make facial expressions such as frowning and raising your eyebrows.

Injecting the target area with neurotoxin results in the relaxing of the muscles that have wrinkles, offering a youthful, smoother appearance.

Neurotoxins are commonly used to treat:

  • crow's feet
  • eyebrow wrinkles
  • forehead frown lines

Neurotoxin injections can also be used to treat the signs of aging on your neck. As you age, the platysma muscle which extends from the collarbone to your cheeks can split, resulting in the formation of bands and an aged outward appearance. Injecting the neurotoxin results in the weakening of the area of muscles closest to the bands while leaving the rest of it intact, improving the appearance and pulling the bands upwards.

In addition, neurotoxins can be used to treat patients with:

  • Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating that can happen on the palms of your hands, feet, and underarms
  • Uncontrollable blinking, known as blepharospasm
  • Migraine
  • Cervical dystonia

Treatment Using Neurotoxins is Safe When Performed by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

A board-certified plastic surgeon can evaluate your overall health and desire for cosmetic change before prescribing a treatment plan that's right for you.

Depending on your requirements, you may require one or more series of injections—most patients notice results as soon as 48 hours after an appointment, with results lasting as long as four months.
